Terms of Service

Simple, transparent terms for a free children's educational app.

Last updated: April 2025

Acceptance of Terms

By downloading, installing, or using the Kidhoot app ("the App"), you ("Parent" or "Guardian") agree to these Terms of Service on behalf of yourself and any child who uses the App under your supervision. If you do not agree, please do not use the App.

Kidhoot is intended for use by children under the supervision of a parent or guardian. Children should not use the App without parental awareness. By using the App, you confirm that you are at least 18 years old or have reached the age of majority in your jurisdiction.

About Kidhoot

Kidhoot is a free, offline-first educational app for young children. It provides interactive learning modules covering subjects such as numbers, the alphabet, colours, shapes, emotions, animals, and more.

Free to start: The core Kidhoot experience is free. Some additional content or features may be available as optional in-app purchases in the future. No internet connection is required for the core learning experience.
  • Multiple learning modules: Covering a growing range of subjects designed to support early childhood development.
  • Multilingual: Exercises available in multiple languages. Perfect for bi- and trilingual families.
  • Offline learning: The core experience works without internet. Learning never stops.
  • No account required: The app works fully offline without any sign-in. An account is optional and used only for backup.
  • Free to start: Start learning for free. Additional content may be available as optional in-app purchases.

License & Acceptable Use

Licence grant

Kidhoot grants you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use the App for personal, non-commercial purposes β€” specifically, for the education of your child(ren). This licence does not include any right to resell, sublicense, reproduce, distribute, or create derivative works from the App or its content.

Prohibited uses

You agree not to:

  • Reverse-engineer, decompile, or disassemble the App.
  • Use the App for any commercial purpose without our written permission.
  • Attempt to extract, copy, or redistribute learning content assets (audio, images, exercise data).
  • Use the App to circumvent or test security measures.
  • Use the App in any way that violates applicable laws or regulations.

Over-the-air updates

Kidhoot uses Expo's over-the-air (OTA) update system to deliver bug fixes and minor improvements between App Store / Play Store releases. These updates are applied automatically and are bound by the same SDK version as the installed app. Major updates require a new App Store / Play Store release.

Account & Cloud Backup

An account is not required to use Kidhoot. All learning progress is stored locally on your device by default.

If a parent or guardian wishes to back up progress across devices, they may optionally link an email address in Settings. This creates an anonymous Firebase account associated with their email, enabling encrypted cloud sync. You are responsible for the security of the email address you use and for any activity that occurs under your account.

Third-Party Services

Kidhoot integrates the following third-party services, each governed by their own Terms of Service and Privacy Policy:

  • Firebase (Google LLC): Provides optional anonymous authentication and encrypted cloud storage for backup.
  • Sentry (Functional Software, Inc.): Optional crash reporting β€” disabled by default, requires explicit parent opt-in.
  • Expo / Meta: Provides the app runtime framework and over-the-air update delivery.

Kidhoot is not responsible for the content, privacy practices, or terms of any third-party services. We recommend reviewing their policies independently.

Disclaimers & Limitation of Liability

Educational outcomes

Kidhoot's content is created to support early childhood education. However, we make no guarantees about specific learning outcomes. Every child learns differently, and the App is intended to supplement β€” not replace β€” parental involvement and professional educational guidance.

Availability

We strive to keep Kidhoot reliable and up to date. The core offline experience is not dependent on our servers. However, optional cloud features (backup, account recovery) depend on Firebase availability and may occasionally be unavailable.

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Kidhoot and its developers shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of the App. The App is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind, express or implied.

Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms of Service from time to time to reflect changes in the App or applicable law. When we make significant changes, we will update the "Last Updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of the App after changes have been posted constitutes your acceptance of the updated terms.

Notification: For material changes, we may notify you via an in-app message on next launch.
