Child Safety Standards

Safety is not a feature we added β€” it is the foundation Kidhoot was built on.

Last updated: April 2025

Our Commitment

Kidhoot is an educational app designed exclusively for young children. Every technical and design decision is evaluated through the lens of child safety. Our commitment is absolute and non-negotiable: Kidhoot will never contain advertising, social features, or content that is inappropriate for young children.

By design, not by policy: The safest systems are those where risks are impossible, not just prohibited. Kidhoot is built so that many safety violations are technically impossible β€” there is no ad SDK to serve ads and no server to send unknown data to.
  • No advertising: No ad SDK integrated. No banners, video ads, or sponsored content β€” ever.
  • No social features: No chat, profiles, leaderboards, friend systems, or sharing.
  • No user-generated content: All content is pre-written and reviewed. Children cannot create or upload anything.
  • No tracking: No analytics SDKs, advertising IDs, or cross-app tracking.
  • 100% offline capable: Core learning works entirely on-device. No external content is fetched during exercises.

No Advertising

Kidhoot has never contained advertising and never will. There is no advertising SDK integrated into the app. This is verifiable by inspecting the app's declared permissions and network activity β€” no ad network domains are contacted.

  • No Google AdMob or Google Mobile Ads SDK
  • No Facebook Audience Network or Meta Ads
  • No banner ads, interstitials, or rewarded video ads
  • No sponsored content or product placements
  • No affiliate links within the app

No Tracking or Analytics

Kidhoot does not track children's behaviour, usage patterns, or personal information for analytics purposes. No analytics SDK (such as Google Analytics, Mixpanel, or Firebase Analytics) is integrated.

What is stored locally (on your device)

The only data the app stores is what is necessary for the educational experience:

  • Child's first name and birth year β€” used to personalise the experience and unlock age-appropriate modules.
  • Learning progress (completed modules, scores) β€” used to show progress and award badges.
  • Language and app preferences β€” used to remember settings between sessions.

Crash reporting (opt-in only)

Kidhoot optionally integrates Sentry for crash diagnostics. This feature is disabled by default. A parent must explicitly enable it in Settings β†’ Backup & Sync. When enabled, only anonymised technical error data (stack traces, not personal information) is sent. No screen content, no child input, and no personal details are included.

No Social Features

Kidhoot is a single-player, single-family experience. There are no features that connect children with other users.

  • No in-app chat, messaging, or comments
  • No user profiles visible to other users
  • No leaderboards or competitive rankings
  • No friend or follower systems
  • No content sharing to social media within the app
  • No multiplayer or co-operative play with strangers

Parental Controls

Kidhoot includes a protected Parent Zone that gives parents full oversight and control of the app's settings. The Parent Zone is protected by a simple mental-arithmetic gate (e.g., "What is 2 + 3?") to prevent young children from accessing settings.

  • Parent Zone access: All settings, backup options, and configuration are protected behind the parent gate.
  • TTS provider control: Parents choose between offline Piper voices (default) and optional ElevenLabs AI voices.
  • Language settings: Parents set the child's language preference and the exercise language(s).
  • Crash reporting opt-in: Only parents can enable crash reporting β€” it is off by default.
  • Backup & account linking: Only parents can link an email address for cloud backup.
  • Child profile: Parents enter the child's name and birth year β€” used only for personalisation and module unlocking.

Content Standards

All learning content in Kidhoot is created, reviewed, and curated by our team to be age-appropriate for young children. The app covers foundational educational categories such as numbers, letters, colours, shapes, everyday vocabulary, and simple concepts children encounter at home and at school.

All content is static and pre-reviewed. There is no mechanism for external content to be injected into the app without a published app update. Content is available in multiple languages.

COPPA & International Compliance

Kidhoot is designed to comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA, United States), the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR, European Union), and equivalent children's privacy legislation worldwide.

  • No collection of personal data from children: Kidhoot does not knowingly collect personal information from children without verifiable parental consent.
  • Parental consent model: Any optional data features (cloud backup, crash reporting) are controlled exclusively by parents.
  • Data minimisation: We collect only the minimum data necessary for the app to function.
  • Right to deletion: Parents can request deletion of all data at any time by contacting privacy@kidhoot.com.
  • No third-party data sharing: We do not sell, rent, or share children's data with any third party for commercial purposes.
Play Store rating: Kidhoot is rated for everyone on Google Play and is submitted under the 'Designed for Families' programme. Our target audience is set to 'Children (under 13)' in the Play Store console.
